Last week, I was fortunate enough to be treated to a complimentary new colour courtesy of Pouts & Pinups in Kirkcaldy – which is about 20 minutes from where I live. I’d been contemplating making a change to my hair for a good few weeks, so when I got the email I was ridiculously excited. Then came deciding what I actually wanted…
I always get nervous when going to a new salon, I think everybody feels that. You get comfortable in your regular place so anxiety kicks in at the thought of changing it all up, especially when you don’t know if you’ll like the results as much as you like the ones from your normal salon. It probably didn’t help that I was running late for my appointment, which was a complete nightmare. I was only a few minutes late and I did apologise, but Lo, who did my hair, was totally fine and lovely about it. She put me at ease within seconds and all my anxieties about the salon itself were completely gone. I was still worried about the end result, but I always am no matter where I go.
The room where you wait before your appointment and where you wait when your colour is developing was the nicest, cosiest room I think I’ve ever been in. I prefer it to my own bedroom, if I’m being honest. They had taken into consideration the weather outside, which was absolutely dire, and cranked the heating up so the salon was nice and toasty but not so warm that you start to sweat through your clothes. In The Lounge, which was what they called the previously mentioned waiting room, there were sofas, a massive magazine rack, some little skincare testers on the table to try out, a TV (which she said I could have control over) and the colouring products that were used on my hair. I loved that they laid out the products they use, it was perfect for those of us who are curious to know what’s being used on their hair. I was given a massive mug of tea upon arrival and some delicious little biscuits, and I felt right at home.
The entire process of picking my main colour and my root colour was so easy – I said I didn’t want it to be permanent so I was shown some semi permanent colours in a colour chart and was able to combine them to make my perfect shade. It helped seeing the colours on hair in front of me, so I would know roughly how it would look. I felt better knowing it was semi permanent too, I wasn’t keen on the commitment of fully losing my blonde. You can also get your colour bottled up in a conditioner to make it last longer and to maintain the colour, which I thought was extremely cool.
I’m so happy with the end result of my hair, it wasn’t exactly the shade I wanted but it’s beautiful and it’ll wash out into more of a ginger shade. It feels in much better condition due to the conditioning properties of the colours used, and I’ve already had so many compliments on it – it is perfect for the season and that’s exactly what I was going for. I was given this service complimentary but I don’t believe I was treated any differently because of that – however they treated me is the standard of treatment they give to everyone. They genuinely care about your hair and I think I would feel comfortable telling Lo if I wasn’t sure about anything, which is an amazing relationship to have with a hairdresser. I love the way she curled my hair as well, it’s how I dream of my hair looking when I go to curl it myself. Being completely honest and candid, I think I’ve found my new regular salon.
Alongside the colour (which was already more than enough) I was given their contour kit to try out! But it’s not your standard contouring, it’s actually makeup free. There’s an illuminating moisturiser and this little device that you use after the moisturiser to tighten up any areas that you want to appear contoured. I haven’t had the chance to try this out yet but I’m very excited to see how it goes and I think I’ll have to give it a little review on my blog! Overall, I’m so excited to have found a place that I love and that doesn’t make me feel nervous. I’d recomment Pouts & Pinups to anyone in the Fife area, all the girls I met were so lovely and they offer a lot of different services, including makeup and nails. I know where all my money is going…
